BATTLEFIELD GUIDE FIELD TRAINING COURSE  MARNE
1914  - 21-22 NOVEMBER 2013

There is an opportunity to be trained as a battlefield guide on the Battle of the Marne 1914.  This short course takes place between  20-22 November 2013 and based on Meaux Siene et Marne France. The training will be based on the competences of the
Guild of Battlefield Guides.

The area is being promoted by the French Tourist
authorities as the closest battlefields to the national museum at  Meaux, just outside Paris.  It is a chance to learn something of the battles and the people who fought for Paris in 1914 and changed the course of the War.   There are stories of British, French and German participants.

This is also a chance to see how battlefield guiding and touring fits within France's strategy for battlefield tourism and to make contact with French organisations in the Marne area.

The Battles of the Marne

The First Battle of the Marne marked the end of the German sweep into France and the beginning of the trench warfare that was to characterise World War One.  A month into the First World War, the German Schlieffen plan seemed to be working, until over a ten day period the Germans were halted in the Marne valley, Counter-attacked by fresh troops from Paris and forced to retreat in an advance led by the British Expeditionary force.

In 1918 the River Marne was the high point of the German attack, and stopped with the intervention of the American Expeditionary Force.
